Genealogy seminar leads off 2015 historical society programs

 
The Granville Historical Society’s 2015 program year will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. in collaboration with the Granville Public Library. The program will focus on Genealogy and will enable attendees to learn more about access to genealogical information at both the library, where the event will take place, and at the Robinson Research Center of the Granville Historical Society.
The Historical Society is also announcing two program series for 2015. The first, headed by Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Denison William Bishop, will focus on “History as Background.” The series is designed to go beyond Granville to help residents of the community better understand today’s events.

Programs will be 45 to 50 minutes in length, to be followed by questions and answers. Periods covered will generally end by 1990 to avoid partisanship and politicization of discussion and to fulfill the mission of the program to provide general background, said Tom Martin, Society president. It will take place in even months of the calendar.

The first program will occur at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 and will feature a presentation by Dr. Bishop concerning The Ukraine.

In the March program, Dr. Reed Browning, Professor Emeritus of History at Kenyon College will focus on how political boundaries (maps), specifically in the Middle East, were drawn, especially at the end of World War I following the Collapse of the European and Asia Minor Empires.

In May, Dr. Donald Schilling, Professor Emeritus of History at Denison, and former president of the Granville Historical Society will discuss Historiography: How History is Written.

July’s program will focus on the evolution of the Shia/Sunni division in the Muslim faith and how it applies to political alliances, and how we can better understand the predictable rivalries in the Muslim word.

September’s focus will be on 19th/20th Century China.

The year will close with November’s presentation, again by Dr. Bishop. It will cover Russia’s historical inability to adopt democracy.

Dates and details of the programs will be announced during the year.

The Board of Managers has adopted a theme of “Business On and Off Broadway” for the next two years to encompass bimonthly programs, some publications, and some of the displays in the museum. Taking place in odd months focus will be on types of business, beginning with the Automobile in February. A panel of those from families involved in various businesses will characterize the series. As part of the effort, the Archives and Collections of the Society will have an opportunity to expand 20th Century holdings, especially in the era of 1910-1990.
In collaboration with The Works, a program on The Granville Inn will take place at The Works at the end of March.

Unless otherwise announced, programs will take place at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Research Center in the Granville Historical Society Museum and will be open to the public. Other 2015 programs will be announced as they come online.
