The Department of Music presents: Max Rabinovitsj Guest Recital

The Department of Music presents a guest violin recital by Max Rabinovitsj with Denison faculty Sam Reich on piano.

Rabinovitsj brings a remarkable professional background to the podium and as a soloist. In Europe, he founded the Trio da Vinci, which toured extensively on that continent. He was Director of Festivals in Entrecasteaux, France and in Sintra and Evora in Portugal. Rabinovitsj debuted as a solo recitalist in New York City at Alice Tully Hall, in Lincoln Center, and performed the Bach Double concerto in Carnegie Hall with Isaac Stern. As a conductor, he became well known for his interpretations of the classical repertoire and his work with Youth Orchestras. He has conducted great artists such as Rostropovich, Jaime Laredo, Gil Shaham, Viktoria Mullova, Maria Joao Pires, Davide Gueringas, Rodger Pascal, Pierre Amoyal and many others. As soloist, Rabinovitsj has played under James Levine, Leon Fleisher, Max Rudollf, Thomas Mayer, Walter Susskind, Vladamir Goldschman, Jerzy Semkov, Lukas Foss, Claudio Scimone, Eleazar De Carvalho, Michael Tabachnik, and Philippe Bender.

Rabinovitsj has been a professor at Washington University, the University of Texas, and the University of Evora (Portugal). He has also taught at the Nice Conservatory (France) and Edgecliff Academy in Cincinnati. He met his wife Mary, a harpist, when they were both students at The Curtis Institute of Music. Immediately upon graduation from Curtis, he was engaged as concertmaster of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Ottawa Ontario, later of the New Orleans Symphony and Gulbenkian Orchestra in Portugal, and then served 14 years as the concertmaster of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Rabinovitsj became Artistic Director of the Naples Community Orchestra in 2014 fulfilling a lifelong passion for conducting. Rabinovitsj returned to Naples to conduct NCO’s 2022 Season Opener featuring Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and Isabelle Durrenberger, violin. His survival as a young boy in Nazi occupied Belgium and his early violin lessons under the tutelage of Elisabeth of Bavaria, Queen of the Belgians is the stuff of legend.

Masks are required in the Eisner Center at all times, and we strongly encourage the use of high quality masks (N95, KN95, KF94).

In addition to the Denison community, we are currently able to welcome vaccinated family members of Denison students, faculty, and staff and a limited number of vaccinated community members.
