Tuesday, May 17, 7pm: “Cuba: Environmental Changes in Urban and Rural Land Use-Get the Prequel Leading Up to the "Open" Cuba!” presented by Tod Frolking, Denison Geosciences professor. Tod will discuss the environmental issues observed during his six research trips to Cuba during the so-called "Special Period"(1990-2015) resulting from the collapse of the Soviet Union. This brought significant changes, radically transforming both the society and the economy. It necessitated the successful introduction of sustainable agriculture, decreased use of autos and farm machinery, and overhauled industry, health, and diet countrywide. A shift to an economy increasingly reliant on tourism has placed new strains on the environment and society.
