On Thursday, June 4, at 8 p.m., in the Barney Davis Board Room (200 West Loop), Professor Joseph S. Alter will deliver a public talk titled "Yoga as Nature Cure: Modernity, Medicine, and the Global Political Ecology of Bodies." Alter has been professor of anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh since 1994, and in 2015 will move to Yale-NUS College, Singapore, as professor of social sciences, anthropology. He is a specialist on the history and practice of yoga both in India and globally, and he has published numerous books and articles on yoga, health and science. In his talk he shows that a full history of yoga needs to see its global spread within the context of the twentieth-century rise of "nature cure" as an alternative form of medicine. This allows us to see how yoga in contemporary practice also is a form of nature cure. For more information, contact John Cort at 740-587-6241 or visit Denison.edu.
