A Philosophy Coffee at the Denison Museum discusses Tragedy, Memory and Memorialization in the context of the work of Kara Walker at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 3, at Denison Museum (240 West Broadway). The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kate Tull at 740-587-6387 or visit Denison.edu. During the coffee, questions will be discussed such as: Who has the most right to shape our collective memories? Is dramatization acceptable? What role can or ought humor play (if any)? In answering these questions we should bear in mind that we sometimes accord the memory of tragedies respect for the sake of the people who suffered through them while at other times we do so in order to secure a better future. Which is more important? For whom do we bear witness?
