Denison Museum will host and participate in the international art event Slow Art Day on Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum in Burke Hall (240 West Broadway). This will be an interactive, full day event featuring a variety of ways to connect to the space and art on view. Each hour will feature a 45-minute activity with a 15-minute approach to connecting to an object in the gallery. The day will start with a yoga and meditation class, followed by a noontime tea and reflection, a gallery talk on the textiles featured in the current exhibition ?Dressing Difference,? and even art making with a print workshop led by the Denison Art Collective. The goal of the event is to encourage individuals to visit museums and discover their own personal connection to art. The event will be free and open to the public. For more information, contact Megan Hancock at 740-587-6255 or visit Denisonmuseum.org Slow Art Day began as an experiment in 2009 by Phil Terry, who wanted to see what would happen if visitors to the New York Jewish Museum looked slowly at a few pieces of art instead of quickly viewing hundreds of pieces. The experiment was a success and the viewers found that by looking at art slowly, they had a more fulfilling viewing experience. From its grassroots origins, the event has grown to include 150 museums around the world in an attempt to slow down art viewing and create a more enjoyable museum experience. Terry founded the Reading Odyssey and is founder and CEO of Collaborative Gain. Slow Art Day creates a global connection between museums that volunteer to be part of the day and believe in helping people discover the joy of looking at art. While each museum participates in the day differently, the common thread between them is that viewers are asked to look at works of art in the museum and then discuss their experience of slowly viewing art. Slow Art Day at Denison Museum will include this aspect of the event along with other events that stress the importance of slowing down and the experience of viewing art. As a teaching museum, Denison Museum engages in and supports learning and inquiry in the liberal arts. Cultural heritage materials, both borrowed and drawn from the University?s permanent collection serve as significant components in the University?s academic curriculum and form the basis of exhibitions and programs. Denison Museum is committed to caring for and managing its collection and resources for the benefit of a diverse audience that extends beyond students and faculty to include visitors and learners from around the world.
