The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Monica Ayala-Martinez, associate professor of Spanish, presenting “Migrants in Brazil: Exploring the migration paradigm in the context of the Brazilian ‘Racial Democracy’.” Brazil has operated under a paradigm in which the state has stimulated migration from different countries at different moments in its history. These migratory movements has been directly related to economic and labor conditions as well as to the dynamics of racial relations in the country. In this talk, Ayala-Martinez will describe those migratory processes as well as analyze the connections between migration and race in the Brazilian context.
