Denison: Former Senator Richard Lugar and former Senator Bob Graham

Denison University's Lugar Symposium presents former Senator Richard Lugar, a member of the Denison Board of Trustees and of the Denison class of 1954, with former Senator Bob Graham, for a discussion of "Political Polarization," moderated by Andrew Katz, associate professor and director of the Lugar Program in Politics and Political Science, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, in the auditorium of Herrick Hall (500 West Loop). Lugar, who served as U.S. Senator for the state of Indiana from 1977 to 2013, the Richard G. Lugar ?54 Program in Politics and Public Service provides Denison students with the educational and experiential background to navigate the public service landscape, and offers the wider community exposure to important issues of national and international consequence. With this inaugural Lugar Symposium, we bring together scholars, policy professionals and elected officials to improve our understanding of the realities of political polarization, and the possible factors which may contribute to or ameliorate the phenomenon. We welcome our invited participants to campus and anticipate the sharing of a variety of perspectives on political polarization, and the productive interaction on this subject among our guests and the Denison community. Former Senator Lugar is the president of The Lugar Center, a non-profit organization focusing on global food security, weapons of mass destruction nonproliferation, aid effectiveness, and bipartisan governance. Senator Lugar also serves as a professor of practice and distinguished scholar at the new School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University. A former Governor and Senator from Florida, Graham has served as chairman of the WMD Center and served as co-chair of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. This followed his service as a commissioner on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and as the chairman of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.
