The Denison University Department of Dance welcomes Adú Proyecto Universal dance troupe at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, at the Recital Hall of Burke Hall of Music and Art (240 West Broadway). The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Beth White at 740-587-6712 or visit Denison.edu. Adú Proyecto Universal is a Peruvian nonprofit association that integrates the theoretical and practical research of dance and music to find a common ground. Their mission is to promote the search for a different identity. They use various artistic expressions as vehicles to develop a sustainable culture. While at Denison, they will visit classes in Latin percussion, and African/Diasporan dance, meet with La Fuerza Latina, Denison?s Latino student organization and with members of the Language and Culture House. They also will perform at the Granville High School. The dance troupe performs originally choreographed pieces that were created under the aegis of Antonio Vilchez, a performer trained at the National School of Folklore whose innovative foray has made him one of the most innovative artist in his field. Adú combine the elements of both traditional and modern dance accompanied by live music with authentic Andean wind, string and percussion instruments. At Denison, Adú Proyecto Universal will perform a 50-minute piece called ?Sigo Siendo,? which addresses themes of maintaining cultural identity under pressure of assimilation and revaluing ancient traditions in a modern world.
