GRANVILLE, Ohio—Third annual interfaith blessing and celebration of our farms and our community is planned in partnership with members from the Licking County Local Food Council and interfaith leaders in Granville, OH. This event will honor those who grow the food as we move into the growing season. The community gathering will take place on Saturday, May 23, 8:15-8:30 AM, at the Granville Farmers Market. Farmers and members of the community will come together for a short, informal ceremony to bless the seeds, water, soil, and tools used to grow food for our community, bless the people who raise our food and show our support for the whole community of growers and food producers in our county, state, and country. It is our hope this event attracts farmers, growers, food producers, gardeners, and market patrons together as we strengthen our community around an integrated food system. This community gathering will allow everyone to share their appreciation to the growers and recognize their important role in our community, and also will help the community understand their important role in the food system and in supporting local farmers throughout the season.
In 2013, during the first blessing over fifty community members attended, despite rainy conditions. This year the event has grown to include, Dwight Davidson from the United Church of Granville, Trip Porch, First Presbyterian Church, Susan Britton, Centenary United Methodist Church, Stephen Appplegate, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Paul Enke, St. Edwards the Confessor.
Members of the community, gardeners, and farmers are encouraged to bring a symbolic item to be blessed. This can include seed, gardening gloves, hand trowel, or water. Following the short ceremony local donuts and coffee will be served as we anticipate the opening bell of the Farmers Market. Any questions may be addressed to the Licking County Local Food Council at lickingcountylocalfood@gmail.com.
