The Department of Music Presents the American Roots Ensemble in concert, under the direction of Adam Schlener. The spring concert will feature music from the first generation to grow up with Bluegrass music. If we consider the Bluegrass sound to be established during the mid 1940’s by musicians like Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, then the first few generations of musicians who played this music would have already been born when Bluegrass came to be. The first musicians to grow up with bluegrass around them were artists like the White Brothers (The Kentucky Colonels) and The Dillards. This is also the first generation to think of Bluegrass music as a “traditional” form of music.
For this concert the students have selected music from the first few albums made between 1963-1964 by The Kentucky Colonels: The New Sound of Bluegrass America, Long Journey Home, Appalachian Swing and The Dillards:Back Porch Bluegrass, Live!!!, Almost!!!
This performance is dedicated to Roland White, April 23rd 1938-April 1st 2022
